Migration: Google Workspace (custom domain) → ProtonMail; Android account (bimble@superbimble.com)

Executive Summary

Can you keep the Android account (bimble@superbimble.com) after shutting down Google Workspace? YES.

The key is to cancel (not delete) your Google Workspace subscription, and keep (not delete) your user account. After cancellation, the user account is converted to an unmanaged consumer Google Account that retains:

  • The same bimble@superbimble.com email address
  • Play Store purchases
  • YouTube account
  • Device identity
  • Photos, Drive (personal), etc. (if user-owned)

What you lose:

  • Workspace-managed Gmail (blocked by default after cancellation)
  • Workspace MDM / device management
  • Google Admin console access
  • Shared drives (user-owned files in My Drive stay)

What already works per your setup:

  • bimble@superbimble.com email already flows through ProtonMail (MX/SPF/DKIM/DMARC configured)

Verified Source URLs (preserved exactly)

Google Workspace Official Docs

  • https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/billing/cancel-google-workspace — Cancel Google Workspace (confirms: domain freed within 24h; user can choose "Let users keep their data and delete my organization's account")
  • https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/users/delete-or-remove-a-user-from-your-organization — Delete/remove user (confirms: "When a user leaves your domain-verified organization, you can delete their Google Workspace account" but also "If you plan to use the email address for an unmanaged personal Google Account, you must wait 30 days")
  • https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/billing/delete-your-organizations-google-account — Delete organization account (confirms: domain free within 24h; all user accounts converted to consumer)
  • https://support.google.com/a/users/answer/7579983 — Remove work account from Android (if device has work profile)

ProtonMail Migration

  • https://proton.me/support/easy-switch-for-business — Proton Easy Switch for Business (imports Gmail, contacts, calendars; guides MX/SPF/DKIM/DMARC setup for custom domain)
  • https://proton.me/support/switch-from-gmail-to-proton — Migrate from Gmail to Proton (personal accounts)

1. Pre-Cancellation Checklist

  • ProtonMail domain (superbimble.com) MX records pointing to ProtonMail
  • SPF, DKIM, DMARC records configured
  • Email already flowing through ProtonMail
  • Export Workspace data (Drive, Calendar, Chat, etc.) via Takeout or Admin data export
  • Note Play Store purchases / YouTube / Photos linked to bimble@superbimble.com

2. Cancel Google Workspace Subscription

  1. Admin console → Billing → Subscriptions
  2. Click "Cancel Subscription"
  3. Choose option: "Let users keep their data and delete my organization's account" (this keeps your personal Google Account identity, just removes the Workspace admin layer)
  4. Do NOT delete your user account
  5. Do NOT delete the organization (unless you want to fully lose the domain identity)

3. After Cancellation

  • Wait < 1 hour for account to convert from "managed" to "unmanaged"
  • Sign in to Android with bimble@superbimble.com using the same password
  • Work profile/MDM will be removed automatically (user may need to re-add account)
  • Play Store continues working; purchases preserved
  • Gmail/Calendar/Drive in Workspace become unavailable (already migrated to Proton)

4. Optional: Fully Delete Workspace Organization

  • If you decide you never want any trace of Workspace again:
    • Wait 24–48 hours after subscription cancellation
    • Admin console → Account → Account management → Delete Account
    • Domain freed within 24h
    • You can later recreate a personal Google Account with the same email, but you must wait 30 days for conflict window

What NOT to Do

Action Why it breaks Android account
Delete your user account in Admin console The Google Account identity is destroyed; 30-day conflict window prevents reusing the email
Delete the organization before canceling subscription All user data is deleted; domain freed but account lost; Android Play Store cannot recover
Cancel subscription but delete your user anyway Same as above; data loss
Expect to keep Workspace Gmail after cancellation Gmail is disabled when subscription ends; already handled by ProtonMail
